Throughout 2019 and 2020 I spent much of my time in the trenches of a long form assignment for National Geographic Magazine documenting the Great Lakes of North America. This jewel of the planet contains 20% of the worlds fresh water and is home to an annual 6 trillion dollar economy shared by the United States and Canada. On this this particular day I was positioned on the south west shores of Lake Superior, it was stormy and dully gray, the kind that makes you think twice about being out. Thinking photography was likely a foregone conclusion I had decided to scout the periphery of a section of shore line, the waves were crashing in under threatening skies. As I pushed further in a came upon a small pond covered in beautiful lilies that stopped me in my tracks. The car was a good distance away, with the help of my assistant I decided to hike back to the car and grab the under water housing and lights.  Photography Art Cinema. Revisited Stay expands a traditional connection through new facets Interwoven between the media of photography and film is a veritable mesh-work of technical, motific, metaphorical and personal interrelationships. Extending from photo-film which, as in La Jetée by Chris Marker (France, 1962) is a montage of single, unmoving photographs all the way to the portrayal of photographic motifs in Hollywood cinema―most recently in Memento (USA, 2000) and One hour photo (USA, 2002)―is the range of filmic-photographic interactions on the one hand, and from the adaption of modes of cinematic production to the imitation of film stills on the other. For instance, with the legendary Untitled Film Stills (1978) of the American artist Cindy Sherman, who later made her debut as a film director with Office Killer (USA, 1997) and thereby, like many others, changed sides: Wim Wenders, Robert Frank and Larry Clark are doubtlessly the most successful of these photographic-filmic border crossers. This brief survey provides only a vague indication of the dimensions of this intermedial field, which in fact extends much further and is constantly being cultivated. Also as a motif in film, photography has experienced a historical transformation: Photographers were once considered to be technicians who mastered a craft but never achieved the status of artists. Photographer-figures were caught in the allure of beautiful appearance, incapable of penetrating to the actual essence of things. Such depth was reserved for literature or painting. When photography in film touched upon the sphere of art, then most often as its contrasting model, as the metaphor for a superficial access to the world. Coming to mind are Fred Astaire as a singing fashion photographer in Stanley Donen’s musical film Funny Face (USA, 1957), or the restless lifestyle-photographer in Michelangelo Antonioni’s genre-classic Blow up (GB, 1966). For the doubting Thomas, only that exists which can be photographed. He ultimately enters the world of fantasy and thereby the field of art only unwillingly, when he becomes entangled in the world of his images. The last of his detail-enlargements shows only the photographic grain and has lost all connection to reality. The photograph looks as if it had been painted by Bill, the painter who is both friend and antagonist to the protagonist.

 Photography as Art It was first around the end of the last century that numerous filmmakers discovered photography as a genuine art form. In The Bridges of Madison County (USA, 1995) a sensitive Clint Eastwood stands, camera in hand, on the threshold of artistic status, and in Smoke (USA, 1994) a tobacco merchant ripens into a philosopher through his involvement in photography. Finally, in John Water’s parody of the art market, Pecker (USA, 1998), a provincial tom-fool is hyped into celebrated stardom amid the New York art scene because of his blurred snapshots. SOME PEOPLE OF KUWAIT, 2000, Color iris print, on heavy rag photo paper signed on verso and inscribed "OK to print', from small edition of just 10. images 40 x 26 ¾", full margins; printed by Muse X. This was a series about Kuwaiti, Arab women or men dressed in Burka's from up close it appears completely abstract from a bit of a distance an image emerges. Jack Butler was a Professor of Art at California State University Los Angeles from 1988 to 2010. He received his Master of Arts degree from California State University Los Angeles in 1972 and earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from UCLA in 1979. He was a dedicated teacher from 1971 to 2010 and taught at numerous educational institutions including California State University Los Angeles, the University of California, Riverside, UCLA Extension, Pasadena City College, East Los Angeles College, Los Angeles Southwest College and was a visiting instructor at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. He has participated in approximately one hundred exhibitions during that time including sixteen solo exhibitions. His work has been shown at such institutions as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Fahey / Klein Gallery, Los Angeles, San Francisco Museum of Art, Gallery Min in Tokyo, Japan, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Osaka, Japan, Photo-Tableau in Paris, France, the Photographers Gallery in London England, the Kansas City Art Institute, The Friends of Photography Ansel Adams Center, the Laguna Beach Art Museum, the Long Beach Museum of Art, Sala Arcs Gallery, Barcelona, Spain, the California Museum of Photography, the Center of Contemporary Art, Santa Fe, New Mexico, the George Eastman House, Rochester, New York, the Corcoran Gallery, Boston Mass., and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and was represented by the former Sherry Frumkin Gallery. He has been published in numerous books and catalogs. These include publications from such seminal exhibitions as “ Proof: Los Angeles Art and the Photograph 1960-1980”, “Photography and Art: Interactions Since 1946”, “Photography and Language” and “Attitudes: Photography in the Seventies” as well as having a catalog of his work published by Min Gallery in Tokyo, Japan. Recent publications include catalogs from the exhibition "Transfictions" at the Fisher Gallery USC and the exhibition "COLA 2004" at Barnsdall Municipal Art Gallery as well as “The Polaroid Years, Instant Photography and Experimentation”, The Francis Lehman Loeb Art Center, Vassar College 2013. During his career he has been involved in numerous workshops and lectures and has curated numerous exhibitions. He has participated in a Distinguished Artists Forum, 20x24 Polaroid Project in 1989 and was supported the by Polaroid Corporation to work on the 20x24 Polaroid camera in New York Studio in 1990 and again in 1998. Polaroid Corporation was also instrumental in assisting with the production of his project Hot Rod "Kulture / Culture.” He was also a recipient of a SECA Award from the San Francisco Museum of Art in 1980, National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (major individual grant) in 1981 and received a City of Los Angeles Individual Artists Fellowship (COLA Grant) in 2004. His work is included in such collections as the Los Angeles County Art Museum, San Francisco Museum of Art, California Museum of Photography, Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts UCLA, La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art, Georges Pompidou National Center for Art and Culture, Seattle Art Museum, the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Art, Japan, the Graham and Susan Nash Collection, the Aaron Spelling Collection as well as numerous other private collections. Going back to the 1840s, the earliest days of photography, people like Fox Talbot, Hippolyte Bayard and Oscar Gustave Rejlander were manipulating images and producing work that they referred to as Art or “Light Drawings”.
